How are we doing?

October 15, 2009

Dear Community Members:

It is with pleasure that I introduce you to the first ever Social Norms Marketing Campaign taking place throughout this school year at Ralph C. Mahar High School and Middle School.  Let us work together to create positive social change in our community by helping people adopt healthier attitudes and behaviors.

The Franklin Regional Council of Government’s Community Coalition for Teens (CCT) has contracted with DIAL/SELF Youth and Community Services – North Quabbin, a partner agency, to work on a social norms marketing campaign targeting parents of Mahar students for the purpose of reducing teen substance use.

Through the year, we will carry out a variety of activities for the project with the purpose of showing accurate perceptions of parents in our community and promoting healthy choices.   We have five target messages and our goal is to saturate the town with them including targeting students, parents, school personnel, school administrators, and community members.  We will be training and working with a small group of youth from our program, CCT staff, and interested Youth Policy Board members, to plan creative, low-cost, high-visibility marketing strategies.

These youth will help us carry out the activities of the project such as posting flyers, chalking messages, approaching local businesses, conducting special intercept/reaction surveys, and providing outreach at events, etc. to implement marketing strategies.

The positive messages, formed from actual 2008 parent survey data conducted at Mahar, are printed on postcards, posters, stickers, napkins, and tote bags.  Please let us know if you need any of these materials for events in the school and community and we’ll make sure they are delivered to you.

Funding for this Social Norms Marketing Campaign is made possible by a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Bureau of Substance Abuse Services.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely yours,

Val LaBelle,  DIAL/SELF – North Quabbin Program Director
